An energy company in the UK working on improving the performance of its tech teams needed an internal tool to asses their maturity levels to develop and deliver software to create high-performing teams.
CONTEXT
I departed from a previously created MVP (screenshots below), in which tech leads answered a quick quiz and received their current level and the top three capabilities they should work on.
For the following stages of the Maturity program, the tech leads had to answer 27 more quizzes. That's a lot of quizzes, so it was important to consider a different approach for scaling the product.
Updating the capability score display
The MVP displayed scores for three capabilities, but the updated system needed to display scores for 27. However, the design of the MVP was not scalable for displaying scores for 27 capabilities as it would overwhelm users and occupy significant space on the page. Therefore, a redesign was necessary to ensure a clear and effective information display.
goals
1. Support
How might we create an experience where users feel supported and help them to grow in their development maturity with confidence?
2. Completion
How might we motivate users to complete the quizzes?
3. Focus
How might we help them focus and not get lost in a complex process?
DESIGN APPROACH
Priotitisation
Supporting the growth of users by assisting them in prioritising where to allocate their efforts.
As users assess their teams, the system evolves by providing recommendations that highlight key focus areas for improvement.
Completion: Assess what's on your level
As a team, it took us some time to realise that asking our users to answer 27 quizzes could be frustrating if the teams didn't have high maturity levels. To motivate completion, we decided to ask the users to assess the capabilities on their level and the levels beneath.
Motivate completion
Answering these quizzes can feel daunting. Users can feel motivated when seeing their progress by breaking the quizzes into groups.
Stay focused
I kept a simple flow so that users could focus better by associating the job to be done with the stage they are experiencing on their journey.
A quick look at the experience
In this quick walk-through, a user sees their team's maturity levels, along with the six capabilities associated with their team's levels. After answering six quizzes (reduced to one for this example), the system recommends two capabilities where their team should focus.
The user can learn more about every capability and see an improvement plan for the key focus capabilities.
We are on the process of user testing to validate our assumptions and ensure they can find their way around different tasks. The maturity framework has been presented to developers and the DevOps leadership receiving a positive feedback.
After reviewing our work, the Design team within the company expressed interest in collaborating with us and adopting a similar framework for their own teams. By implementing this approach, we can help the company save money and reduce both development and design times while providing a consistent experience throughout the organization.
